It
took over 10 years of steadfast patience for
Irena and Jeremy Hutchings to achieve their vision of opening
Australia's first luxury tented camp. Paperbark Camp is
eco-tourism at its best, being a low impact, niche-market
venture that adheres to the principles of ecologically
sustainable tourism. The objectives are to promote the
natural environment, to sustain the local ecology, to provide
local and regional benefits and to successfully operate a low
key, niche, eco-tourism facility. Paperbark Camp is situated on the banks of Currambene
Creek, a lovely bush-lined tidal estuary, close
to Jervis Bay.

The
Gunyah is at the heart of the camp and raised high off the ground,
amongst the treetops, to catch the breeze. A chic space, designed by
Sydney Architects, Nettleton Tribe, it is cooled in summer by refreshing
sea breezes off the bay.
The Gunyah (Aboriginal for meeting place or place of shelter), has
two sides on which the doors fold back to create a large indoor/outdoor
space. In winter, with the doors closed, the log fire creates a warm,
cozy and sociable atmosphere
